The 17th Meeting of the UN Open-ended Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea will convene from 13-17 June. The Consultative Process is intended to facilitate the annual review by the General Assembly of developments in ocean affairs and the law of the sea by considering the Secretary-General's report on oceans and the law of the sea and by suggesting particular issues to be considered by the General Assembly, with an emphasis on identifying areas where coordination and cooperation at the intergovernmental and inter-agency levels should be enhanced.

The European Development Days (EDD) 2016 will convene under the theme ‘Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Action and Implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development'. The Forum will bring together over 5,000 participants from the development community in over 120 main sessions and side events. Sessions will focus on the following topics: people (inequalities, gender, leave no one behind); planet (climate change; circular economy; sustainable consumption and production (SCP); and water-food-energy nexus); prosperity (inclusive, sustainable and resilient cities; science, technology and innovation (STI); and trade, growth and sustainable development); peace (working with fragile states; migration and refugees; inclusive and peaceful societies); and partnership (means of implementation; ensuring accountability; and engaging the private sector). A follow-up event, the EU-Africa Business Forum, will focus on sustainable energy and impact investigating, highlighting the role of the private sector in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

11:59 pm: World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD) 2016

This year's World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD) will take place under the slogan 'Protect Earth. Restore Land. Engage People'. The global observance event will take place in Beijing, China, and will be hosted by the State Forestry Administration of China. The event will showcase China's new development strategy, 'The Belt and Road,' which aims to strengthen cooperation to combat desertification and land degradation, primarily in Eurasia. During the celebrations, China will launch the 'One Belt and One Road Joint Action to Combating Desertification Initiative' together with interested countries and stakeholders. WDCD 2016 activities will also seek to demonstrate how the target of Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) can be a critical element for achieving other sustainable development as well as climate goals.

The Council is the Executive Organ of IMO and is responsible for supervising the IMO's work.
